* * * *

In the early moments before dawn, a woman dressed in the garb of a Gypsy fortune-teller looked down into a bubbling cauldron. Her hair was red and curly, with a blue bandana wrapped around it, edged in gold coins. She also had long, dangling earrings on, and each finger of her hands had big, bold rings on them as she waved them over the lively liquid.

“Jack Blood!” she rasped as she gazed into the bubbling liquid.

The guttural whisper came once, twice, and then again, drifting on the breeze close to Jack’s ear until he woke up. He lifted his head from the pillow and looked around in the dark and listened, but when he heard nothing, he thought he’d been dreaming and turned over to go back to sleep.

“Jack Blood, you will wake now!”

Again his head jerked up from the pillow, and his gaze searched the darkness. “Is someone there?”

“Jack Blood, come to me!”

There it was again, but where was it coming from? Jack rose from his bed and looked around. He peered through the windows, but when he didn’t see anything, he finally opened the door, went out on the deck and peered into the darkness among the surrounding trees. Even though the night was silent and still, he could feel a presence that hovered near. “Where are you?” he called out in little more than a whisper.

“Jack Blood, I’m waiting!”

His head jerked toward the direction it came from first and then back inside at Taejon to make sure it hadn’t awoken him. With care, he closed the door quietly and then turned, his eyes narrowing as he looked into the darkness. He still saw nothing, but suddenly he heard the voice again.

“Come to me, Jack Blood!”

The voice was compelling, causing him to move quietly as he crept down the steps and began a hurried walk toward the woods that surrounded the area. One step in front of the other took him deeper and deeper into the wooded area until he finally realized he’d reached the edge of the Everglades. Before he knew it, he had lost himself among the trees and swamps as he made his way in and out of the foliage until he came to a small, dry path. It wound around alligator-infested pools, marshes, and even quicksand, at last coming to a little cabin that was lit up from inside. Jack crept up to it and looked in the window. There he saw an old witch.

“It was foretold to us…”

Somehow he knew this must be the witch Esmeralda, the old fortune-teller who had foretold the fall of the circus. While he was watching her, suddenly her head turned and they were looking at each other.

A jolt speared through Jack at the power in her gaze. He suddenly became afraid, and without giving it another thought, he turned to run. But before he could get away, the old witch was at her door, and with an outstretched hand, she yelled out, “Stop!”

When Jack was hit with a bolt of flying magic, he jerked and stopped suddenly, his body frozen.
